HOMECOMING OVERSHADOWS FOOTBALL IN IRISH COUNTRY
By TERESA SETTLE NORRIS
Tennessee Express News Writer
It's not about winning or losing—although these things do happen, and for the Fighting Irish, it's been a nine-game losing streak this season.
But Friday night wasn't about that... it was about HOMECOMING, and that's a totally different ball game, anyway.
Homecoming is a time of CELEBRATION... for students and their teachers, for their friends and their families. So even though the Irish lost (57-0), nobody seemed to be overly disapointed Friday night. The football players worked hard, the parents cheered, and students showed that even though it's been a losing season, they still have school spirit.
This was displayed in the class floats and by the presentation of the homecoming court, for starters, along with later during the half-time show when the Houston County High School marching band took to the field with their “Are You Scared Yet?” theme that included Michael Jackson's famous “Thriller.”
The air was chilly, but thankfully rain-free, as fans in the stands waited for the pre-game homecoming festivities, but they were rewarded with a small parade of the class floats and the attendants, dressed in glittery prom dresses.
The junior class outdid the others with an outstanding float theme, all about “beating the competition.” The float had a giant electric mixer and—you guessed it—White House was in the mixing bowl, clearly getting beaten up by the Irish as the beaters of the mixer moved realistically.
The senior float with a giant Pac-Man eating the competition came in second. The sophmore float was also animated and came in third, while the freshman float finished last.
The big moment came after all of the homecoming attendants were presented, with the announcement that this year's homecoming queen was Miranda Mills.
And even though the Irish couldn't seem to get a break during the game, Houston County residents—young and old—had a good time just being together.
For complete coverage, watch all of the festivities and the game on Channel 12, thanks to Mike Davis!

H1N1 Vaccination Update
As you have no doubt seen in the news, local health department have received limited quantities of both forms of the H1N1 vaccine.
We are currently providing the injectable vaccine to high priority recipients only: pregnant women, children 6 months through 24 years of age, caregivers/household contacts of children, healthcare workers and First Responders. If you are in one of these groups, you may receive the vaccination now. There is no charge.
In Houston County, please call 931-289-3463 for an appointment.
Stewart County is taking walk-ins 7:30-4:00 Monday through Friday. If you prefer, call 931-232-5329 for an appointment.
The current level of activity can be managed by our health department staff.
If and when the amount of vaccine and number of eligible recipients exceeds those resources, we will identify specific dates and times to schedule additional workers. If you are scheduled to work, you will be eligible for the vaccine as a healthcare worker.
We will provide more definite information when it is available.
