Having won serveral Contest the Houston County band was not so lucky this last weekend as they competed against 29 other class 1 bands in the state taking the 22nd spot in the contest but they won the heart of the people of Houston County as as in most things they were winners just by competing.

The Gathering

“On May 5th, “The Gathering” met at the Irish Grill in Erin. Our special guest, Martha Pile, UT Extension Agent of Montgomery County discussed the Houston County project of producing a community level brochure to advertise individuals involved in “Homestead Economics”. These are entrepreneurs of food based, organic food, artists, crafters and hobbyists, entertainers, and specialized instruction to name a few. The group plans to create 3 brochures highlighting the three main areas of Houston County. Interested parties may contact the following committee members for your area to complete a SHORT form.

Advertising in the brochures is FREE and supported with a Sustainable Community Innovation Grant. Our first submission deadline is June 9, 2008 and brochures will be printed and available in July 2008.

FERRY REOPENS
On a Foggy Morning History was made as the River Ferry Between Houston and Benton County was Re-opened.The ferry will hold 22 passengers, plus the crew members. The barge is capable of transporting six full size light vehicle trucks and two compact cars, or eight medium size cars, or one empty tractor trailer. The hours of operation are:
Monday – Friday 5:30 am to 6:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday 6:00 am to 6:00 pm
Fees vary according to size and type of vehicle, as set forth in Tennessee Code Annotated 54-13-317. For residents of Henry, Benton, Stewart and Houston Counties, the fee will be set at $.75 per day. What we found of most intrest was the 11 mile extension of Hy 147, which work will start in the spring of next year tying it into Hy 69 and making the landing on the Benton County side a modern landing instead of the county road it is now this should greatly increase the traffic through the area.

MINIE PEARL AT THE FAIR
Memphis has Elvis sightings but here in the Wells Creek Basin We have Minnie Pearle sightings such was the case this Last Friday at the 2007 Houston County fair.
