Without pomp and circumstance, Houston County High School band conductor William (Matt) Whitt hopped on the director's stand at 7 P.M. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, and music flooded the forum.
In the audience were family, friends, music lovers, and supportive community members who came out to enjoy a free concert during Erin's festive Irish Week.
After the opening number, Whitt welcomed everyone. “Good evening. Welcome to the fourth annual March March concert, a concert in March made up of nothing but marches.”
Some, like "Call to Victory," "The Washington Post," and "On the Mall," were written and arranged by composers Karl L. King, John Phillip Sousa, and Edwin Franko Goldman.
An added feature this year included a preview of music that the HCHS band students will be performing next week as they compete in the North Tennessee Concert Festival, to be held at Austin Peay State University.
Their rendition of a brief excerpt of “Resting in the Peace of His Hands” by John Gibson was truly exquisite... and sure to indicate success next week in the competition.
All in all, the evening's concert featuring the HCHS wind ensemble was a toe-tapping, foot stomping good time.
Turn to Houston County's Channel 12 for a complete broadcast of the concert, thanks to your friends at the Wells Creek Basin network!
